Saud Shakeel is a Pakistani international cricketer and he is also the current vice-captain of the Pakistan cricket team. He had made his international ODI debut for the team back in July 2021 whereas he made his test debut against England in December 2022. In 2023, he became the first Pakistani batsman to score a Test double century in Sri Lanka against the hosts. He bats left-handed. He was born on Sep 5, 1995 in Karachi, Pakistan.

Early Life and Education

Saud Shakeel was born in Karachi and he spent most of his childhood in the Sagheer Centre of the Federal B. Aarea. Not much information is given about his family or his early life but we assume that he had a good environment while growing up. We also do not have much information about his educational qualifications. 

What we do know about his early career is that Saud had suddenly come to the attention of the manager of Quetta Gladiators, Azam Khan. Through a connection with Saud’s uncle, Azam introduced him to the Crescent Academy when he was just a 6th-grade student.

Eventually, Azam got Saud into practice sessions where he had to deal with players like Rumman Raees, Anwar Ali, and Tabish Khan. Subsequently, this led to Saud being associated with the Pakistan Cricket Club and getting mentorship from international cricketers like Sarfaraz Ahmed and Asad Shafiq. 

Saud Shakeel’s Professional Cricket Career

Saud Domestic Cricket Career

Saud ade his first-class debut on 26th October 2015 in the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy and 2017, he was selected to play for the Quetta Gladiators in the 2018 Pakistan Super League players draft.

He was the leading run-scorer for Pakistan Television in the 2017-18 Quaid-e-Azam Trophy with 488 runs in 7 matches. In the next year, he was titled in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s squad for the 2018 Pakistan Cup. He was the leading run-scorer for Pakistan Television in the 2018-19 Quaid-e-Azam Trophy with 414 runs in just 5 matches. 

By the time it was December, Saud was named in Pakistan’s team for the 2018 ACC Emerging Teams Asia Cup. In the next year, he was named in the Federal Areas’ squad for the Pakistan Cup that year.  Subsequently, he was named the captain of Pakistan’s squad for the 2019 ACC Emerging Teams Asia Cup in Bangladesh.

Saud International Cricket Career

In 2021, Saud was named in Pakistan’s Test squad for their series against South Africa. In 2021, he was named in Pakistan’s Test and limited overs squads for their tours to South Africa and Zimbabwe but he was ruled out of the ODI matches against South Africa due to a personal injury. 

In June 2021, Saud went on to be named in Pakistan’s Test and ODI squads for their tours of the West Indies and England respectively. On 8th July of the same year, Shakeel made his ODI debut for Pakistan against England. 

Finally, in October 2021, he was made the captain of the Pakistan Shaheens for their tour of Sri Lanka.

Not only was he named in Pakistan’s Test squad for their series against Bangladesh in 2021, but he was also named in Pakistan’s Test squad for their series against Australia in the following year. 

In the same year, Saud was selected to play for his country in the Test series against New Zealand, and the second match, hit his maiden century in Test cricket. 

Back in September  2023, he was named in Pakistan’s 15 man squad for the World Cup 2023 in India.

He also made his World Cup debut on 6th October against the Netherlands and in this game, he managed to score 68 runs in 52 balls and thus, earned the ‘man of the match’ award.

By this time, he had established his international career and domestic career and had become a well-known name in the cricket industry.
